Although not exactly tea, we are also a big fan of spices at Hebden Tea (especially those that are in some of our teas!). Now with the days getting colder, we could all do with something to warm ourselves up, and that is when we can truly appreciate these wonderful ingredients. Things such as cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg are all associated with keeping the cold away. And what better way to bring these together than in a hot cup of mulled wine. Here then is our quick guide to making this winter warming treat.
Recipe
- For this recipe you will need:
- 700 ml red wine
- 1 heaped tablespoon of Hebden mulled wine spices
- Optional: 1 tablespoon of sugar
The kind of red wine you use is down to your own personal preference. However, the spices in mulled wine can play an interesting contrast against the flavours of a darker, richer wine.
The recipe itself is very straight forwards:
Heat the wine and spices in a pan on a hob until it boils briefly.
Turn down the heat and allow to simmer for 5 – 10 minutes
If you prefer a sweeter mulled wine, add your sugar towards the end of the simmering.
Once you have finished simmering the wine, take off of the hob and serve immediately.
There is a lot of flexibility within this recipe that comes down to your own personal tastes. The spices can be left in to simmer longer if you prefer a stronger, spicier drink. Similarly, you can add some water too make a softer drink. If you have any mulled wine left over, you can always strain the mixture into a jug to separate the ingredients once it has cooled down, and store in a fridge. Then whenever you are ready to have another cup, you can heat it back up on a hob until it just about boils and enjoy it again.
We hope you enjoy using this recipe and treat yourself!
